How long does it take to complete a dissertation? How long is this process? Why is the dissertation process so long?

Common questions asked of most colleges and universities, while many want to believe there is a standard or specific timeline that a dissertation can be completed. There are many variables that go into completing a dissertation. Consider life in terms of work, children, family, and the hiccups that come with life, this does not even count the time waiting for approvals or feedback. Most students would love to rush the process and believe everything can be done in a year, is that possible? Yes, anything is possible with time, hard work and accepting feedback.

In a doctoral dissertation, you as the dissertation candidate will have a dissertation chair and two committee members that will be assisting you through the dissertation process. Now for some schools, it is possible for there to be a requirement for more committee members, typically three is the standard number. Selection of this committee is very important and pick each member wisely.

Writing, writing and more writing is what will take place in a doctoral program! The fact is that it is not just writing for everyday use, Academic Writing is the expectation for a doctoral program. The challenge then becomes what is academic writing? Even professors cannot agree on what academic writing is and is not. Personally, I have had a professor tell me that in academic writing adjectives and descriptive words are not used, which can be confusing to the writer. There are some basic guidelines for academic writing and in this month’s blog would like to address a few tips for academic writing.

As we continue through the educational journey, the way grades are handle changes with each educational level. Grades may not seem like an important topic for a doctoral program, when in fact they are an extremely important to determine the different role they play when going for a doctoral degree. In undergraduate and Master’s programs, there is a big focus on the overall GPA (Grade Point Average). In a doctoral program, grades play a very different role and this can create a challenge for the learner that is acclimated to applying themselves to earning the highest grade possible. This month’s blog is about understanding grades in a doctoral study to prepare you for the doctoral program.

Over the past month, I had a visit with one my stepson’s and he had a discussion with us regarding what is a doctoral program? The reason for his question was because my husband has just begun his DBA (Doctorate in Business Administration) with an emphasis in technology at the end of December. Most individuals know that a doctoral program is the highest degree that can be earned, the difference is the task that must be performed to graduate and earn the doctoral designation.

Many universities and colleges allow the doctoral students can select their dissertation chair and committee. Now this is not true for all universities and colleges, it is something to consider when selecting where to obtain your doctoral degree. There are many thoughts of theory when it comes to selecting a dissertation chair and two committee members. Remember to become peer-reviewed the requirement is three doctorates. Some universities and colleges will allow guest doctorates to serve on a dissertation committee, it does require special permission.

Congratulations!! So, you have decided to go after your doctorate degree, but which doctorate degree do you go for?

One of the biggest questions is what doctorate do you go for. There are many opinions on which doctorate, a DBA, a PhD, an EdD or one of the many others.

DBA = Doctorate of Business Administration
PhD = Doctorate of Philosophy
EdD = Doctorate of Education

One of the many recommendations I hear is go for an EdD degree, because so many people believe that if one has their doctorate they want to teach at the college level. The challenge is not everyone wants to teach K-12 or at the college level and therefore an EdD may not be appropriate. An education degree is not required to teach college level courses, but 18 hours in the field of study is required to teach that topic. Therefore, if you want to teach at the college level make sure the degree is going to fit with what you want to teach.
